Moosonee Action Group Arena Campaign 1983 : In early 1983, Moosonee badly needed a new arena to replace the one that the town had inherited from the former Canadian Forces Station Moosonee. After years of consultations, it appeared that the project was dead due to a lack of funding. A group of local residents set up the Moosonee Action Group to demonstrate support for the arena and to raise funds. This album displays some of the group's publications and activities which ultimately resulted in the Ontario Government providing additional funding which, along with local fund raising, got the arena constructed.

1990 Moosonee march in support of Kanesatake : During the Oka crisis in 1990, the Moosonee Native Friendship organized a march to show support for the people of Kanesatake. The march started off at the Friendship Centre and headed to the bridge over Store Creek where the supporters stood on the road for a few minutes.

Opening of the Brick in Moosonee : The Brick is a large home furnishings chain. The owner of the Timmins store, Brian Vacchino, after serving customers in the north from there, decided to open a new location in Moosonee. The grand opening took place on September 8, 2007. Candice Tourville is the store manager.

Joint Fire Training 2006 August : Joint Fire Training exercises held in Moosonee, Ontario involving the fire departments from Attawapiskat, Moose Factory and Moosonee. Many of the pictures shown involve the Ontario Fire Marshal's mobile flashover training unit. The pictures in this gallery are generally large enough for printing -- that means that they may be a bit slow to display, especially as a slide show. If you want to print them, use the "save" option to make sure that you get the larger version of a given picture. For a few pictures, there are two versions, one large and one somewhat smaller posted on this site. Smugmug sells prints from these pages, be aware that these are priced in American dollars and shipped from the US. I am not in the photo printing business and have nothing to do with this.

These pictures may be copied for personal usage, as long as the copyright is fully indicated. These pictures are not for sale, but rather a piece of history to be shared. Richard (Dick) L. Provencher has taken up Poetry and Prose writing since his stroke in 1999. Because of prayers from family and friends he continues to recover. He worked for the Ontario Department of Public Welfare from his office in Moosonee in 1967. His responsibilities included administering General Welfare Assistance and Family Benefits to all persons from Moose River Crossing to Winisk on Hudson Bay, including Moose Factory Island. He enjoyed immensely his work with the Cree natives and to this day retains friendship with several families. Since then he worked as a County Social Services Administrator, then Home for Aged Administrator, in Sarnia Ontario. He and his wife, Esther, moved to Truro, Nova Scotia in 1986 and worked for 14 years with Truro Downtown Services - Tourism, Marketing and Business Development. He can be reached at richardprov1@netscape.net . Richard is a long time member of the Writers' Federation of Nova Scotia. He believes writing is a global adventure, a journey without borders. Richard and his wife, Esther, have four children and five grandchildren. He has many poems and stories in print and online. Simply type out his full name on the Google search engine to access a sampling of poems and stories published. His Poetry Chapbook, "In the Light of Day" is available from www.mercutiopress.com . Also, Port Town Publishing in Superior, Wisconsin, USA will soon publish his Picture Story Book, "And French Fries." He hopes these pictures will help provide a background of the strength of will, heritage and love of the land depicted by his Native friends. And he misses them.
