Volleyball Experiments 2009 April 2nd : Moosonee Volleyball 2009 April 2nd, Moosonee Native Friendship Centre v. Moosonee Fire Department; Northern College v. Wabusk Air These are high ISO shots taken in a dark gymnasium so quite noisy. First time I ever shot volleyball. Images reduced to 2048 pixels maximum size in any dimension to keep upload time tolerable.

Hockey Experiments XI 2008 December 2nd : Men's hockey at the Moosonee Arena 2008 December 2nd. Technical notes: These images were shot at ISO 3200 f2.8 1/400. Using ISO 3200 results in noisier (grainier) pictures but permits use of a higher shutter speed. Images were cropped and generated in Lightroom. All images taken with Canon 1D MarkIIN and 70-200 IS f2.8 lens. Some images were brightened and a few had colour balance changed. Early images were shot in RAW and later ones as JPGs. This was the first time I had used ISO 3200 much on this camera and results are very noisy. Using JPGs instead of RAW allows for faster shooting and saves space on disk but allows less latitude for post processing.

Hockey Experiments X 2008 November 27 : Men's hockey in Moosonee. Tonight I mostly use ISO 3200 (the digital equivalent of noisy film) to be able to use a bit more speed. The result is that the pictures are noisy (usually shows up as coloured dots in the pictures). However shooting mostly at 1/400 of a second means that some things show up more clearly, e.g. the puck when it is moving.

Hockey Experiments IX 2008 November 20th : Assorted hockey at the Moosonee Arena on 2008 November 20th. All pictures shot with a 300mm lens (no zoom), iso 1600 or 3200, one ice speed of 1/250 to 1/400, no flash, a few shots of spectators. This pictures in this gallery were generated in Lightroom (i.e. quickly). I found working with the fixed focal length lens interesting but ultimately limiting (e.g. I shot from one corner of arena, the 300mm (effective focal length 490mm) could only cover a player from head to toe past the blue line. In the past I shot hockey mostly with a 70-200mm zoom and will probably do that again. The arena seems darker than in the past and I learned that the wattage of the lights had been reduced from 1000w to 750w each.

Soccer Experiments 2008 June 10th : Adult indoor soccer in the Moosonee Arena. This is a dark place for hockey, it is even darker for sports without an ice surface. I compromised on speed and light with these pictures. I thought about using flash but that can be bothersome to the players, result in redeye due to distance involved and limit how fast pictures can be taken,

Hockey Canada Moosonee 2007 : Hockey Canada Skills Development Camp held in Moosonee 2007 November. If you want to print out these pictures you can copy them to your computer by moving the mouse over the picture on the right and clicking on save. You can also order prints from smugmug, these are apparently very well done but they do come from the US. Note that many of the pictures in this gallery were taken at high speed in a relatively dark arena without additional lighting as a result of which image quality may suffer.

Hockey Experiments III : Shots taken at Moosonee Men's Hockey on December 12 and 14, 2006. All of these shots on the 12th were taken with the equivalent of an 80mm lens (50mm used on Canon 20D), so they focus on close by action. The shots on the 14th were taken with a longer zoom lens and also at higher speed so they may appear a bit darker.
